Now I realize I never wrote about A Visit from the Goon Squad, but it’s just one of those books you can’t really review without giving it all away. I just want to say that I enjoyed it immensely. Eagan’s style, though hard to follow at first, comes together organically and successfully in the end. It’s quirky, and thoughtful, and so worthy of all the praise it’s gotten.
Currently, I am reading The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. When I read The Virgin Suicidesand Middlesex, I fell in love with his writing style. He has this uncanny ability to make the lead characters so sincere and real that you almost feel like you are reading someone’s diary or autobiography, something convincingly non-fiction.
So far, The Marriage Plot, has not disappointed, but it’s failed to give me the same page turn-y feeling after 100 pages in. It’s definitely more hyper literate than I’m use to which oftentimes makes me feel a) like I’m reading a textbook, b) like there will possibly be a pop quiz on said text book, and c) that I am really dumb and I should drop this class… wait!… But yeah. It’s definitely integral to a book that takes place at Brown with a hyper literate, English major, freak as its main character. We’ll see how it goes.
Murakami’s IQ84 is next on my reading list. I feel like I’m the last person to read it and everyone has been telling me it’s torturous to get through. I’m just not looking forward to carrying a 900 pager on the subway with me every day. Someone get me a kindle!
